Breakfast at Urban Pantry, Canberra

Updated: May 17, 2021

Date attended: 4 October 2015 Style: All-Day Café Cuisine: Modern Australian What to look out for: Any dish with bread. My friends and I really enjoyed the Brioche French Toast and Grilled Banana Bread dishes

“Walking around the block aimlessly in Canberra until we bumped into Urban Pantry - very unassuming and simple.”

So the story starts off with my friends and I walking around the block aimlessly in Canberra until we bumped into Urban Pantry - very unassuming and simple. I admit, we were in a ‘let’s-just-bum-here” situation as we didn’t really know what to do for an hour until our booking at Pâtissez.

As there wasn’t any room inside for our party-of-5, we were offered to sit outside on the communal tables – and fortunately the weather was good. The place inside felt quite modern, and the outside space was quite hipster; quite like my friends.

We didn’t know what to order from the menu; and I was scared that it would be another stock standard breakfast joint. So in typically Lexxie fashion, we ordered a bunch of things from the menu. Once the food came out – it was a sight for sore eyes. But did it taste as good as it looks?

What Lexxie Says: Out of the 4 dishes, my friends and I were looking forward to the Eggs Benedict with smoked salmon. Most likely because we all love Eggs Benny. By comparison of all the dishes, it was the most visually disappointing dish. What a dish looks like is one thing, taste is another – and the Eggs Benedict here was nice.

The Vegetarian Omelette looked good and the flavours were there, but felt a little dry. It needed some sort of sauce or glaze to go with it. In the end, we ended up asking the wait staff for tomato sauce. Not very sophisticated of us, so I understand if you pass judgement of us.

Let’s move on to positives. The Grilled Banana Bread wasn’t something that came to mind first. And it ended up being one of our favourite dishes of the morning; actually, it was a big hit among us. The combination of banana bread, maple syrup and bacon works every time and the ricotta just added an extra texture to the dish.

The other favourite was the Brioche French Toast. The apple and blueberry compote and vanilla mascarpone lifted the dish to another level. But who am I kidding? This is a modern café after all.
